Seasons come and go, and with them, another upland season has come to an end. I still vividly remember the scent of that first September morning as I stepped outside. As September approaches each year, there’s an unmistakable shift in how evenings and mornings smell — crisper air carrying an earthy aroma that feels refreshing and invigorating. Our dogs grow increasingly eager, their anticipation building with each passing day. I can almost sense it myself — the excitement is palpable: “It’s finally here!”
The air feels alive, and the energy of the season is contagious. Dogs tremble with excitement as I prepare for the hunt, organizing gear, loading shotguns, vests, and shells into the truck. The joy and anticipation mirror theirs, creating a shared feeling of eagerness. Yet, now that the season has ended, those memories linger as a cherished part of the past.
With the season behind us, the nights grow longer, and the days shorter — the winter solstice has passed, so has the Montana upland season — bringing new promise and anticipation for the seasons ahead. Our dogs curl up in their beds or on the couch, resting peacefully, as we look forward to a new year filled with fresh beginnings, opportunities, and adventures. It’s a time to be grateful for what has been, to learn from it, and to eagerly await what’s to come.
A few months of rest follow — a pause before spring and summer bring camping, fly fishing, and the chance to learn new skills or sharpen and refresh rusty ones.
Every new year offers a clean slate, free from the challenges of the last. With that, I wish you a very Happy New Year!
